Ready to ‘Like’ reality TV?

Here we go again; another day, another reality show. If only they were authentic and innovative, then we’d have no prob-lems with them. But they are not, and the scripts, which reality TV show producers deny exist, are appalling and far from what can be perceived as reality.

But that didn’t stop the makers of Ready For Love from trying their hand at the lucrative business of matchmaking on TV. Here’s how it works: three successful men are put on the spot when they have to sift through a dozen love applications presented to them on this show. The three include Plain White T’s member Tim Lopez, businessmen Ernesto Arguello and Ben Patton, who appear on the show in the hope of finding love.

There is the show’s first flaw right there. These guys have already made their money and they are having such a hard time find-ing love that they have to go on TV? You decide on that one.

Then there’s the issue of the three matchmakers who have been appointed to select the 12 female finalists for each bachelors. The matchmakers are Amber Kelleher-Andrews, Matthew Hussey and Tracy McMillan and their search starts on a Facebook page for the show that accepts applications based on the applicants’ looks and personalities. But the crux of any application that comes their way lies in how close the woman come to being what the men are looking for.

It’s all The Bachelor with a social network twist and just as we saw with that show, this one will suffer from of a lack of authenticity.

Seriously though, these accomplished men must already have female traffic coming their way as they are at the top of their game. So essentially they have seen it all and it is highly unlikely they need to find love on TV. Especially love outsourced from the Net.

The other thing that is intriguing is that the show is a production by “Wisteria Lane’s” Eva Longoria ( pictured). Given that it is a show on finding love and was shot earlier this year, we know for Longoria it comes from a personal place. A few years back she fell in love with and married NBA star Tony Parker. After a much-publicised wedding in France (Parker’s home country) the marriage failed and the couple divorced. So Ready For Love might just be Longoria subtly announcing that she has moved on and is trying to encourage other people to do the same through this show.

But as was seen in the US, this is not a groundbreaking programme.

Which brings us to the next point. Vuzu needs to explain why they brought this show to our screens. After showing its first two episodes on NBC in the US, the ratings were so low they had to pull it. The rest of the season was then “aired” online through the network’s website, Hulu. Now if that is not a sign, then I don’t know what is.

Nonetheless, the show is on your TV schedule.

- Ready For Love airs Saturdays on Vuzu (DStv channel 116) at 8pm.
