Stand out with these 3 summer looks!
In what seemed to be a very short season, South Africa’s top dance show, Step Up or Step Out, steps off the screen on Sunday. We are left with only three groups so let’s look at why any one of them could take the cup.
For the contestants who don’t win, I suggest they look at Vintage, who once appeared on the show, and they’ll see that the loss is not the end. It is actually a new beginning, depending on how they use the experience.
The remaining groups in the competition are Durban’s finest, Cyber-Links, De Javu from Port Elizabeth and Snap, Crackle and Pop (pictured), who hail from Cape Town. It seems nobody came from the north this season, with Gauteng out of the running. Then again, past winners, including Thembisa Revolution, were from Joburg, so it is time for a winner from another city.
For a group that started dancing in the hallways of Newlands East Secondary, where the five members were educated, Cyber-Links did really well in the competition. Naturally, groups never stay together, that’s a given, but this crew were destined for great things.
From the moment they made the top 10 they upped their game and became a force to be reckoned with.
If you have watched them perform you will have realised that the group’s dance moves are taken from ordinary things that may include computers, motorcycles and robots.
With their main inspiration being choreographer Somizi Mhlongo, you know they probably will go far. We will learn on Sunday if this is their moment to shine.
That’s if Snap, Crackle and Pop have nothing to say about it. The Capetonian crew are versatile as they have formal training in b-boying, traditional dance, African contemporary and modern jazz. That is enough to give anyone a fighting chance. Whatever happens on Sunday, this group will not take the competition lying down.
With a name like De Javu, you can only expect that which you can’t explain. Launched six years ago, the ensemble have had enough time to practice their moves to excellence. They become the first crew to end up in Step Up or Step Out’s top three. If the stars are aligned correctly for them on Sunday, they will become the first group from Port Elizabeth to clinch the title.
