Hellcats l Vuzu l 9.30pm

FANS of the Bring it On franchise will cheer the introduction of Hellcats on Vuzu’s entertainment menu. It has all that Mean Girls cattiness and Beverly Hills 90210 family drama.

Marti Perkins (Aly Michalka) is at the heart of the story. After her scholarship at Lancer University in Memphis, Tennessee, is cancelled – a fact her mother, Wanda (Gail O’Grady), who could learn a thing or several about motherhood from Nora Walker (Brothers & Sisters) decides to keep from her – Marti resorts to her last option. If she wins a place on Hellcats – the legendary cheer squad at Lancer’s – she will secure her scholarship. Despite the uphill she gets from the über-diva team captain Savannah (Ashley Tisdale), coach Vanessa Lodge warms up to Marti and signs her on to the team.

Instead of putting an end to Marti’s woes, it seems to be only the beginning as she has to contend with Savannah as her new roommate and deal with the wrath of a jealous Vanessa, who isn’t happy that her ex-beau Lewis Flynn has taken a fancy to Marti.

I guess hell hath no fury like a group of self-centred, spiteful and bitchy cheerleaders who are all about the gloss and glamour.

Special Assignment l SABC3 l 9.30pm

THIS week’s focus shifts to Swaziland and investigates whether democracy is encouraged, or if it is regarded as unpatriotic, with the resulting consequence being imprisonment.

Host Ashraf Garda unveils the real impact of Swaziland’s political crisis on its citizens.

As the situation stands, the government refutes reports that they have political prisoners. Meanwhile, activists claim there are many youngsters who have been imprisoned under the anti-terrorism act.

The activists also allege that the prisoners are being tortured for speaking out against King Mswati III’s rule.

Are the youth being silence in Swaziland?

With inprisonment hanging as a looming threat to anyone who dares to wear the banned T-shirts, young people are going into exile.

Tonight’s show features comments from the anguished families of those “political prisoners” and also includes footage from inside the prison.

Special Agent Oso l Disney Junior l 3.55pm

A BRAND-new channel that launches on DStv (Channel 309) today.

Aimed at pre-schoolers, Disney Junior provides educational shows that help little ones develop socially during their formative years while keeping them entertained with the interactive elements found in the programme content.

One of the shows bound to pique interest is Special Agent Oso, which is centred on a lovable panda bear who bumbles his way through his missions for U.N.I.Q.U.E (United Network for Investigating Quite Usual Events).

Together with his sidekick, Paw Pilot, kids learn how to mail a letter, clean their room and use the library.

The Tyra Banks Show l SABC3 l 2.30pm

WHILE I’m no great fan of Tyra Banks the talk show host, it doesn’t take away from the fact that her platform as a supermodel has made her somewhat of an icon to teenagers.

As such, Banks uses her “girlfriend” status to dish out advice on all things beauty, fashion and relationship related.

Today, she addresses a very sensitive topic in a show titled, I’m 9 and I Hate My Face.

One girl talks about how her desperation to be lighter in complexion, while another yearns for plastic surgery… at age 11.

While it is indeed worrying that little girls obsess about their looks to such a drastic extent, Banks tries to talk sense into them by interviewing women who have been-there-done-that – some without anaesthesia.
