Style that still lets the bride shine...
Let’s assume you are in a serious relationship with someone who is supposedly the love of your life. It is a good time in your life, on the work and home front. But your spouse, who is famous, wants to take the lucrative deal a local network has offered to have your relationship made into a reality TV show. What would you say?
If you said “yes” you could instantly afford that Aston Martin and would be famous overnight. Most of us would jump at the chance. As far-fetched as this scenario is to you and me it is someone’s reality.
In fact, rapper Kanye West and Kim Kardashian have had this conversation several times. He is obviously not interested, but might end up doing the show for the sake of his relationship. It is almost the same as how Kim’s sister Khloe had her husband, NBA star Lamar Odom, join their family reality series, Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Now that they are having trouble in their relationship it is confusing to watch any of the dated lovey-dovey episodes of their TV show Khloe and Lamar that looks at their married life. Ironically, Kris (of Keeping Up With the Kardashians) and Bruce Jenner have announced that their marriage is over.
This is why it is interesting that Vuzu is bringing us another of these oversharing shows in the form of Tamar and Vince.
Tamar is the youngest of the Braxton sisters and this show is an offshoot of the The Braxton Family Values, which included all the Braxtons and superstar sister Toni.
Feeling the need to break away from her big sister’s shadow, Tamar not only released another solo album, she also made the reality show about her life with husband Vince.
We all hope it works for them, but looking at the past, the moment you place your relationship out there for the world to see, you have lessened the chances of making it work.
Forget Lamar and Khloe, let’s look at a few other examples of relationships that were thwarted by reality TV.
Wrestler Hulk Hogan, broke up with his wife of 25 years, Linda, after they thrust their family into the public eye with Hogan Knows Best.
Before that, all we knew was the wrestler, now we know of the irresponsible kids and all that happens in their private lives.
There was also Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, who first had a highly publicised wedding then a TV show, Newlyweds: Nick And Jessica, which obviously cashed in on the attention being paid to them. It only took about two years for them to come out and announce that while the show was a huge success, their marriage suffered as a result. The two divorced and are both in good relationships, but with no TV shows on the horizon.
With all this said, we wish Tamar and Vince all the best.
• Tamar and Vince airs every Monday at 7.30pm on Vuzu (DStv channel 116).
