The unreality of ‘Real Husbands’

Sometime last year we had an interview with Chris Spencer over the Real Husbands of Hollywood. He spoke of how he and fellow comedian Kevin Hart thought it would be funny to do a show about the husbands of Hollywood poking fun at all the other “Real Housewives” reality shows that have proliferated all over TV.

This was how Real Husbands of Hollywood was born and now it is doing quite well. The cast includes Nick Cannon, Boris Kodjoe, Kevin Hart, Robin Thicke, Nelly and JB Smoove. However, that said, we can’t ignore the fact that while these men are “just playing”, they are also reflecting on their real lives. This is where the problem comes in with reality TV shows about celebrities’ lives.

Take, for example, Khloe Kardashian, who was in the country over the weekend with her new boyfriend, rapper French Montana. If local TV was still showing Keeping Up With the Kardashians and the episodes were those in which Khloe was still with NBA player Lamar Odom, it becomes glaringly obvious that the story is dated.

Back to the husbands, the same can be said for them. When they started out they were all married, but if you look at this show today a lot has changed. Rapper Nelly was married to Ashanti, but they have since parted ways. In fact, the latest news is that Ashanti has been posting pictures of herself with boxer Floyd Mayweather. This is probably her telling the world that she has moved on. So why is Nelly on a show about husbands when he is no longer wearing a ring?

The same can be said for Kevin Hart, who from the outset was not attached.

As for Robin Thicke, we all know how rocky his relationship with Paula Patton is. She may have braved her way through the silly Miley Cyrus stunts, but just a month later she was calling off their marriage. He is apparently pleading his case with her in the hopes of returning to happier times.

Granted, the others Kodjoe – Smoove, Martin and Cannon – are in steady relationships but we can’t turn a blind eye to the fact that their counterparts are not.

• Real Husbands of Hollywood airs on Tuesdays at 9.30pm on Sony Max (DStv Channel 128).
