I always chuckle when Childish Gambino – who is actor Donald Glover in real life – raps: Donald Glover, no relation. Hey, I don’t judge people who pour out a little for the homies they lost, so don’t judge me. But I digress.
I laugh because of two reasons. One – that’s a Boondocks (a cult animation classic) reference that’s a hat tip to racist Uncle Ruckus, no relation. But it’s also, no doubt, a wink to everyone who has ever thought Gambino may be related in one way or another to veteran actor Danny Glover.
I know, I know, there are a few people who think that’s probably the same person. It’s not. One’s a rapper who just made Forbes Magazine’s 30 Under 30 list and the other is that old man who used to kick ass and take names alongside Mel Gibson in the Lethal Weapon film franchise.
As Roger Murtaugh and Martin Riggs, Glover and Gibson, respec- tively, had the action flick game on lock in the late 1980s and mid-1990s. This week, Top Movies will take you on a trip down memory lane and remind those who may have for- gotten just how badass this pair was, by screening all four of the popular buddy cop films.
Last year, there was talk of there being a fifth film in the works. The catch? Neither Glover nor Gibson would star in it. Say what? Yep, considering Gibson’s domestic issues and his problematic mouth have garnered him the kind of attention you can’t even try and turn into good publicity, it’s no wonder no one really wants to see ol’ Riggs be portrayed by Gibson.
But Glover? We’ve all forgiven him for beating Whoopi Goldberg in The Color Purple, haven’t we? How would a 2012 version of Lethal Weapon without Glover look?
Would it be an option to cast Donald Glover? He’s already done pretty well for himself as a writer and actor in 30 Rock as well as one of the fan favourite characters in Community. Most recently, he and his fans campaigned on the likes of Twitter to land him a job as the next Spider-Man and the first black man to be cast as such.
Needless to say, he didn’t quite get the gig, but maybe he, no doubt having seen a Lethal Weapon or three in his life, could have picked up a few tricks from the older actor who shares his surname?
But who would have to become Riggs incarnate? How about Channing Tatum? Too buff? Okay, maybe Zac Efron? Too childlike? Zach Galifianakis? Too confusing to pronounce? Either way, word is cop-turned-screenwriter Will Beal has been tasked with writing the screenplay. So I’m sure the producers could find someone else to star in a Lethal Weapon 5 – if the fans want it.
• The Lethal Weapon festival is on Top Movies (DStv Channel 100) on Friday and Saturday.
