VIEWERS are suckers for a good love story. It |doesn’t matter how it is pitched, it is all about how it is packaged by the writers.

In the crime drama genre, there has been a noticeable trend of hot females partnered with hot sidekicks, so to speak. Throw in some sexual tension between the two and, voila, you have chemistry and dramatic twists amid all the crime-solving.

A series that bears all these trademarks is Castle, featuring Stana Katic, a leggy beauty who is always so stylishly dressed you’d swear she was on the wrong set. Let’s not forget those flowing locks that seem almost incongruous with her feisty personality. Especially when it comes to Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), a stupidly wealthy novelist who uses her as a muse for his popular novels.

Of course, over the seasons, his case of writer’s block has evolved into a serious case of romance. While she fought it, she eventually succumbed to his advances.

And with this unconventional approach to the genre, where the woman calls the shots, the dynamics work beautifully. It’s charming and funny. Especially, with them juggling work, their personal lives and their own emotional hang-ups.

And they aren’t the only adorable crime-solving couple. Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon (The Mentalist) tied the knot after (TV) years of denying their feelings for each other. In Bones, forensic anthropologist Dr Temperance “Bones” Brennan and FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth didn’t just hook-up; they got pregnant, had a baby, moved in together and got married.

Then there’s Forever: as much as the premise is centred on New York Medical Examiner, Dr Henry Morgan and his immortality, he is often at the beck and call of NYPD Detective Jo Martinez. It wont’ be long before these two blur the lines between professional and personal, methinks.

Back to Castle, this season picks up from the after-math of the wedding that didn’t happen as Richard went missing. And, despite his memory loss, the two try and piece together the events around his abduction.

• Castle, M-Net Edge, from tonight at 7pm.
