Twin Peaks comeback delayed until 2017

Though Twin Peaks' big comeback had previously been slated for a 2016 release on Showtime, Variety are now reporting that the much-anticipated third season will actually come to screens in 2017, following statements made by CBS Corp. chief Leslie Moonves during the network's third-quarter earnings conference call.

This may not come as surprising to some fans, as series co-creator Mark Frost said in July of this year that he didn't think the new season would be available until 2017.

Speaking at Baseball's Hall of Fame, he said: “A lot of people always look back at Twin Peaks and say that was the start of this explosion we've had in good television drama, but we did it in a time when there were still only three networks. The challenge for us is to try and come back and raise the bar above what we did the last time. We're coming back with season three of Twin Peaks after a 25-year absence. We've finished the scripts, we start production in September, and that will be coming out on Showtime sometime in 2017.”

Production on the show was halted earlier this year when Showtime and co-creator David Lynch disagreed over budget issues and the number of episodes which would be produced for the new season, but the network and writer eventually made a deal calling for “more than nine” episodes, all of which Lynch would direct.

Original stars including Kyle MacLachlan are all lined up to star in the new season.
