Young US divas who get their parents to spend a fortune on their “sweet 16” birthday bashes can move over because two of Cape Town’s self-proclaimed socialites are set to take the stage.
DStv viewers familiar with MTV’s My Super Sweet 16 parties definitely shouldn’t miss the offshoot, My Super Sweet World Class, screening on Sunday night.
Cousins Liz Stone and Elena Pappas, who count the Locnville twins among their personal friends, are the season opener hosts for the youth channel’s new series.
Think naked photo shoots, shark diving and fortune-telling in the build-up to the party. And, if that’s not enough, there was a live snake slithering around at Camps Bay’s Café Caprice, causing a few screams from girls at the 150-strong party.
The party girls told Weekend Argus, ahead of the show’s screening this weekend, that they were celebrating their “personalities and lifestyles”.
The theme was “A Magical Garden of Eden”, envisioned as having a “dark side” and a “light side” to the restaurant.
The girls also asked their guests to join them in a naked photo shoot prior to the event.
Stone said this was in line with the theme, along the lines of Adam and Eve. She added that no one got completely naked, but they did get to see their efforts projected at the big event last September.
The girls also had to perform a magic trick at the party which, for Stone, meant a levitation – which a fortune-teller predicted would be a flop, a prediction that proved untrue.
In order to calm their nerves ahead of the performance, local illusionist Russell Fox advised them to go shark cage diving.
The cameras managed to capture some drama on the day of the party, with Stone and Pappas arguing about dresses.
Stone said, “Elena and I are not prima donnas. In our dressing room we were fighting over what to wear. Only a tiny snippet made it in.”
Pappas said the party cost R50 000. This was sponsored by a rum brand, although they paid for their outfits themselves.
Stone is not shy or nervous of the portrayal of their lifestyles.
“This is not to be taken too seriously. Yes, we are socialites,” she added.
Pappas added that they were hoping for a good response.
“People should not think South Africans are so spoilt. We have a good lifestyle and this was a good party.”
Pappas believes the episode makes for good viewing on par with other party reality shows.
“With the two of us it is so much more interesting.
“You won’t recognise Caprice. The episode showcases Cape Town.”
l The episode airs on MTV (DStv channel 321) at 11pm on Sunday. - Weekend Argus
