Stand out with these 3 summer looks!
The entertainment industry has changed a lot since the days of Charlie Chaplin. Back then, when movies were still in black and white, it seemed the actors were more focused on honing their craft than the trappings of fame.
Chaplin’s was the silent movie era, when the emphasis was on the actor’s actions to relate the story. With that handicap, the man with the funny moustache still succeeded in pioneering comedy in film. With that came the fame and Chaplin became one of the most treasured actors ever to grace the screen.
Chaplin is just one example of an entertainer who was passionate about his craft – there is a long list of others who also had a yearning to entertain and followed in his footsteps .
Sadly, that trend has changed over the years as more and more people in showbusiness are in it for the fame, not because they have the talent. The first place you’ll find confirmation of this is in the reality TV genre. A good percentage of these shows are either about washed-up celebrities trying to resuscitate their brand or random people wanting after a bite at fame.
We viewers are to blame for this because without us tuning in there wouldn’t be a demand for reality TV shows. Kim Kardashian and her sisters would be nobodies and in their place would be people who are actually talented at something. But that is not the case, is it? We are so in enamoured with the so-called reality TV genre that we will lap up anything the networks serve us.
This is why we have Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous coming to MTV. With such a title you’ll know just what to expect. Created by comedian Bo Burnham, this sitcom takes a dig at reality shows which are vacuous yet become successful, bringing fame and fortune to those starring in them.
Burnham stars as Zach Stone, a kid just out of school who wants to be famous. But he lacks talent in any discipline. Since most people are doing it, Zach hires a camera crew to film his life, hoping to make an instant reality TV show hit.
Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous may be a sitcom, but we know it makes fun of shows like Geordie Show, The Only Way Is Essex and all the other senseless programmes.
The intriguing thing is these shows are so bad that even trying to make a satire on them could be a bad idea. This is the case with Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous because, while it was shot earlier this year, it wasn’t renewed for a second season.
Part of inspiration for this show came from the results of a US career day survey which showed that about 40 percent of high school kids plan not to go to go college, but instead take a shot at fame via reality TV. Well done, Kim K and co, you’re such an inspiration to the young ones.
Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous airs on Friday at 8.30pm on MTV (DStv channel 130).
