Call for Entries:

The Imbewu Trust is calling for applications for their third SCriBE Scriptwriting Competition with a number of prizes available this year. Closing date is July 31 and the top five scripts will be selected for a one week staged reading in October with the opportunity for discussion and feedback from the public and members of the theatre industry.

The winning script will be produced by a professional creative team for a run at a Cape Town theatre next year. A second winner will have the chance to further workshop the play, with a third award of the Scribblers Dream, a financial prize to enable a writer to work alongside a mentor to develop the script.

The Imbewu Trust, a non-profit organisation, was founded by Same de Romijn and Paul Griffiths to create an accessible community of varied voices that can flourish through collaboration, resourcefulness and innovation. Imbewu is looking for new works of outstanding quality, original content and which represent the range of the South African theatre landscape. Wits Theatre invites suitably qualified and experienced applicants for the position of workshop assistant. This person is expected to support the activities in the Wits Theatre workshop, in the building of sets and maintenance of the workshop. The person will support the activities of the workshop manager and ensure the Wits theatre workshop is clean, neat and safe. Key responsibilities: workshop housekeeping – all duties pertaining hereto; set construction: including but not restricted to assisting in the construction of sets for internal productions; assisting in the move in of Wsioa sets into the venues and movement of set pieces; maintenance and health and safety – reporting on and assisting with regard to maintenance and health and safety.

Requirements: Grade 10; two years’ experience in entertainment industry; basic wood and metal work experience; demonstrated ability to display initiative and attention to detail; sound organisational skills and ability to work under pressure. Preferences: driving licence beneficial.

Applications for Bursary:

The Arts and Culture Trust in partnership with the Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation and Nedbank Arts Affinity offers three Performing Arts Scholarships for local aspirant performers. The programme is aimed at Grade 12 pupils and individuals younger than 25 years of age who are neither registered for an undergraduate degree nor considered to be a professional performing artist. The programme takes the form of a competition in which participants are assessed on their acting, dancing and singing potential and is open for registrations until May 31. The National Arts Council invites individuals and registered arts organisations in the following disciplines: craft, visual arts and literature to submit their applications for project funding. Applications are invited for projects of national significance that are involved in the creation of new works, arts development, arts promotion and that facilitate access to the arts and markets. Furthermore, applications that have a strong community base and have been conceived in collaboration with others working in similar fields will be preferable. Projects that celebrate the 20th anniversary of freedom and democracy are also encouraged to apply.
