Masterclass and international scholarship programme opportunities for singers:

Applications are invited from prospective participants in a masterclass to be held in Pretoria in February, conducted by Professor Josef Protschka of Musikhochschule in Cologne, Germany. Between January 31 and February 6, Protschka will offer masterclasses at the University of Pretoria. Candidates must send a CV and audio recording, (preferably mp3 files) to [email protected]. The recording should include one work each from the Baroque and Classical (preferably Mozart) periods, a 19th-century opera aria, plus a lied of the candidate’s choice. Eight candidates will be accepted. The deadline is December 1. Selected candidates must organise travel to and accommodation in Pretoria, but no charge for the masterclass. One student will be chosen for a one-year academic study with Protschka in Cologne. The Apollo Music Trust will cover the expenses of that year of study. Auditions:

Joburg Ballet’s 2015 Aspirant Programme: auditions will be held on Saturday. The programme offers an opportunity to train for either six months or a year and experience the environment of the professional ballet dancer. Successful applicants will participate in Joburg Ballet’s company classes, rehearsals and productions. Auditions consist of a ballet class of about 75 minutes’ duration. A studio will be available from 9am for auditioning dancers to warm up, and the auditions will start at 10am. Pink tights and leotards for girls and tights and T-shirts for boys; girls please bring pointe shoes. The programme offers practical and theory. Fees are R1 500 a month. Competitions:

The third Len van Zyl Conductors’ Competition will take place in 2015/16. Entry forms are now available. The competition is open to South Africans not older than 33 on January 1, 2016. It offers performance opportunity and masterclasses with international conductors; the semi-finalists and finalists perform with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and the overall winner receives an all-expenses paid one-month internship with the Philadelphia Orchestra in America and two months of study at Northwestern University in Chicago with Victor Yampolsky. Entry forms can be downloaded from the CPO website at www.cpo.org.za. Closing date is March 15, 2015. Call for Proposals:

The British Council and the South African Department of Arts and Culture are launching an open call for proposals from artists and institutions to be part of the SA-UK Seasons project, a shared programme of activities, opportunities and communications. Selected proposals will receive a grant to activate existing relationships or create new connections within the arts. The call for submissions will end on November 23. There are three funding strands available: application for a partnership support grant; application for a creative catalyst grant and official endorsement of a project.
