Masterclass and international scholarship programme opportunities for singers:

Applications are invited from prospective participants in a masterclass to be held in Pretoria in February, conducted by Professor Josef Protschka of Musikhochschule in Cologne, Germany. Between January 31 and February 6, Protschka will offer masterclasses at the University of Pretoria. Candidates must send a CV and audio recording, (preferably mp3 files) to [email protected]. The recording should include one work each from the Baroque and Classical (preferably Mozart) periods, a 19th-century opera aria, plus a lied of the candidate’s choice. Eight candidates will be accepted. The deadline is December 1. Selected candidates will be responsible for organising their travel to and accommodation in Pretoria, but no charge for the masterclass. One student will be chosen for a one-year academic study with Protschka at the Music College in Cologne. The Apollo Music Trust will cover the expenses of that year of study. Auditions:

Joburg Ballet Cuban School auditions on Saturday, October 18, from 10am to 4pm. Children aged six to 11 can audition for a place in this prestigious institution. The audition will entail a physical assessment, thus children need to be appropriately dressed: leotards (girls), T-shirts (boys), ballet tights and ballet shoes. Any tight clothing is permitted so that the panel may see the child’s body in motion. Auditions are free of charge, at Gypsey 1 Studio at Joburg Theatre, Hoofd Street, Braamfontein. Roodepoort Theatre is holding auditions for soloists and chorus members. Singers wanting a solo role need a letter of recommendation from their vocal coach and at least two professional productions on their repertoire; full student productions will be taken into account. To be considered for a comprimario (supporting) role, singers need a letter of recommendation from their vocal coach. Classically trained singers older than 16, who can read music, qualify to audition for the chorus. The chorus rehearses every Wednesday night at the theatre during the year. Competitions:

The third Len van Zyl Conductors’ Competition will take place in 2015/16. The competition is open to South Africans not older than 33 on January 1, 2016. It offers performance opportunity and master classes with international conductors; the semi-finalists and finalists perform with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and the overall winner receives an all-expenses paid one-month internship with the Philadelphia Orchestra in America and two months of study at Northwestern University in Chicago with Victor Yampolsky.
