Call for Entries:

South African Community Theatre Association (Sancta) is running a mini one-act festival at the Hillbrow Theatre from December 1 to 6, with rehearsals the previous week. They are looking at nine to 12 plays. The play must run between 30 and 45 minutes. There must be a minimum of three speaking parts. Dance/choreography – singing/ music – own language – can only be used for 20 percent of the production and it must form part of the storyline. The rest of the play must be in English/ Afrikaans. You have five minutes to set the play and three minutes to strike the set in blue lights or penalties are incurred. Each play will have a two-hour rehearsal period the week before the festival. There will be one day of workshops by Dorothy Gould and other professionals for all groups and each group will have their own two-hour mentoring session – between October and November. The casts and crew must be at the theatre one hour before technical and performance. The fest will be adjudicated by professional adjudicators who will give feedback on the plays nightly and decide which plays will go through to the final round. Written adjudications will follow later. The fully scripted typed play – even if a work-shopped play – must be sent to Noel McDonald of Sancta by October 5. Entry fees are R200, Sancta membership fee and R200 for application to the festival. Contact Noel McDonald: 083 309 4315.

Auditions:

Roodepoort Theatre is holding auditions for soloists and chorus members. Singers wanting a solo role need a letter of recommendation from their vocal coach and at least two professional productions on their repertoire; full student productions will be taken into account. To be considered for a comprimario (supporting) role, singers need a letter of recommendation from their vocal coach and although having stage experience is beneficial it is not a pre-requisite. Classically trained singers older than 16, who can read music, qualify to audition for the chorus. The chorus rehearses every Wednesday night at the theatre during the year. Auditions on November 10 at 7pm at the theatre. Contact Marisa Louw: 072 987 5780 or e-mail [email protected].
