Always And Forever: A Tribute To Luther Vandross
The Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City Casino (tonight)
The one thing about tribute shows is that you should never compare the original artist to the one who covers the music. The results are always devastating. We need to understand that the covering artists are usually fans of the legends they cover. It’s almost impossible to outdo the original so all these newer artists are doing is paying tribute to their idols by performing their music.
Lloyd Cele did an amazing performance in a Marvin Gaye tribute. Other artists who have been resurrected on the stage include Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson.
Timothy Moloi has the honours tonight as he performs songs of one of the best R&B voices to grace the studio, Luther Vandross.
A friend once said if people could die and leave their talents behind, then he would have paid anything to purchase Vandross’s voice after his death. As absurd as that sounds, it illustrates just how powerful Luther’s voice was and how much he is missed.
