Fresh from a short run in Cape Town and with someone in its line-up having scooped a Comic’s Choice Award, Mass Hysteria makes its way to Joburg.
The stand-up comedy show is on every night at the Teatro theatre at Montecasino and follows the formula used when the concept show made its debut last year.
As the press release puts it: “Let’s face it, when you read the papers today, it’s hard to believe that the country isn’t being run by a bunch of comedians already.”
Except, politicians’ humour is not always easy to swallow. It’s good that this comedy Parliament features eight professional funnymen and a woman.
You can expect to see Casper de Vries, Nik Rabinowitz, Chester Missing, Mpho “Popps” Modikoane, John Vlismas, Ndumiso Lindi, Joey Rasdien and Tumi Morake.
As you may know, Modikoane took home the Breakthrough Act Award at the third annual Comic’s Choice Awards last weekend.
The award is presented to “the act who has made the most impact in moving from a newcomer to an established act in the past 12 months”.
We don’t think Modikoane received the honours just because he can bust a move in Strictly Come Dancing.
Modikoane impressed the audience so much at the second Comic’s Choice Awards that it’s no wonder he is on most people’s radars.
He says he didn’t expect to win.
“First,” he says, “I was in total shock when I won.
“I have been nominated two times – this year was the third time – and never took home an award, so it was quite a shock.
“It’s an absolute honour to be considered by fellow comedians as the breakthrough act.
“It’s the comedy community who votes for you to win the award, so this means that the majority voted for me.
“For them to say that ‘We basically see you as the next guy’ is an honour to me.
“After four years of putting my head down and working, I’ve reached this point, and I can honestly say that I’m proud of myself.”
If you have not seen his stand-up set, Mass Hysteria will be a good place to check out just why the comedy community voted for Modikoane.
“I think what people can most expect from me at Mass Hysteria is seeing the inner workings of my mind,” says Modikoane.
“Mass Hysteria is the biggest comedy platform, and each act has between 15 and 20 minutes to showcase their comedic capabilities.
“So I’m going to deliver exactly that. I think that that’s what people really appreciate.
“It’s not about who has the funniest ANN7 joke or who can make fun of Julius Malema the best – it’s really about your mind and who really takes it there.”
Modikoane also likes to get down on the dance floor, so should you wish to vote for him on Strictly Come Dancing, SMS the code SCD6 to 34024.
“Yeah, man,” he laughs, “first Strictly Come Dancing, then the Oscars in a year or two!”
• Catch Mass Hysteria at the Teatro at Montecasino in Fourways until August 31. Tickets are available at Computicket.
