GIG OF THE WEEK

Zakes Bantwini

Soweto Theatre

Die Heuwels Fantasties

Pretoria National Botanical Gardens

Quick question; where will you be celebrating June 16, Youth Day? If you are not travelling out of the city to see family and friends, or having a braai at home, you might want to keep reading.

Many artists have given their time on this public holiday to entertain you, so, depending on you flavour of choice, you will find at least one gig that will appeal to you.

Zakes Bantwini fans will be delighted that our own James Brown will be at the Soweto Theatre (cnr Bolani and Bolani Link rds, Jabulani). The show has been a long time coming. Bantwini has, in the past, spoken about how he wanted to do a show with orchestral instrumentation. The performance will pay tribute to the musical history of Sophiatown.

Bantwini will perform jazz renditions and popular tracks from his album Love, Light and Music. The show starts at 8pm and tickets are priced from R150 from www.webtickets.co.za

Still in Soweto, Channel O and Vuzu bring you the Channel O and Vuzu’s Youth Day Celebration. The line-up includes DJ Andy X, DJ Dimplez, DJ Ms Cosmo, Reason, Tumi (from The Volume), Toya Delazy, Kabelo, Pro, CashTime Fam, Teargas and DJ Kenzhero. No need for me to hype up that one, you know it is going to be pumping.

The venue: Chaf Pozi, (cnr Kingsley Sithole and Nicholas sts, Orlando Towers, Soweto). R50 gets you in.

For house heads, DJ Fresh and Euphonik will be at Gold Reef City from 2pm to 4.30pm. This pair never disappoint, so if you have not seen them on the decks before, this is your chance.

Die Heuwels Fantasties and Van Coke Kartel are among the country’s best rock bands and they will take to the stage at the Old Mutual Music in The Garden series at the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens, Cussonia Ave, Brummeria. Tickets are priced from R80 to R100 at www.ticketbreak.co.za

This is the general picture |of what’s on offer and you can make up your mind as to |what your poison should be, |then go out and have some fun. – Munyaradzi Vomo
