RESTAURANT REVIEW: The Brew Monkey

Sun City's new restaurant The Brew Monkey is a gastro pub with a rustic industrial look and feel. It is situated at the Valley of Waves, which allows you to get a spectacular view of the tidal pool while sitting outside on the deck and enjoying your meal.

The Brew Monkey is a self-service gastro pub which allows you to build up your meal by ticking your options on the menu. Drinks and food must be ordered at the bar and delivered by the waitrons.

We were presented with welcome (very welcome!) drinks, which were a choice between Sun City’s signature Chardonnay and a mojito. Allow me a moment to tell you about their perfect mojito which is made from scratch using fresh ingredients, not the syrup that most restaurants use. This mojito was made with love and I could feel the love with every sip I took.

We started with the charcuterie board, which is a combination of prosciutto with mozzarella and marinated artichokes, home - cured pancetta, chorizo, saucisson sec, tomato relish, grain mustard, pickled and croutons. This board offered a range of exotic tastes and textures.

This was followed by the Plain Caesar salad with white anchovy, tomato crispy bacon, egg, garlic bruschetta and Caesar dressing. It was light, delicious and refreshing.

The king prawns with a tomato, garlic and coriander dressing were lovely, but unfortunately the prawns were not as fresh as they should have been.

Lastly we had the Brew Monkey signature dish - smashburgers. The name comes from the way in which they are made - meatballs are smashed with a spatula on the grill during cooking, resulting in a moist patty. The burgers are 100% beef with crispy bacon, cheddar, onion, tomato and BM's famous BBQ Sauce. I found the beef patty to be quite bland and lacking seasoning. However, the combination of the rest of the ingredients made up for it.

We tried a tasting selection of handpicked craft beers. Three are 11 beers available on tap including Castle Lite, Hansa, Carling Black Label, Castle Milk Stout, Peroni, Black Jack Lager, Striped Horse Pilsner, CBC Amber Weiss, Citizen American Amber Ale and Savanna Dry. We tried the Striped Horse, CBC, and Citizen.

For dessert, The Brew Monkey a variety of milkshakes with and without alcohol. We no longer had space for dessert, but I was told that their peanut butter and honey milkshake with Drambuie for the adults, is the best.

Although The Brew Monkey doesn't have a children's menu, the option to create your own meal makes it easy for you to select the food your children will enjoy.

Brew Monkey is open from 12h00 to 22h30 daily subject to seasonal times. The Valley of Waves entry fees apply during the day but after 18h00, guests can enter the Valley of Waves at no charge to visit the restaurant.
