Musical fans will be amped to hear the Company of Theatre Arts (Cota) is back on stage from this week, this time bringing a new musical revue called Just Musicalz.

Neil Snyder from the company said the review promised to be a trip down memory lane, reliving the on-stage excitement big shows such as Hairspray, Chicago, Annie Get your Gun, Burlesque, Grease, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, West Side Story and more offered.

“The show is an amalga-mation of a previous show, Musical Mania, but has far more new content. The first half of the show is set in a rehearsal type of environment, while the second half follows the ‘artists’ through to when they put on their production,” he explained.

Snyder said the idea for the show emanated from the popularity of musicals.

“Musicals are well known and, from an audience perspective, are always nice to watch. There will be glitzy costumes, modern dance styles, comedy and lively entertainment,” he said.

The cast of 13 will be staging the company’s fifth show at The Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo when they put on Just Musicalz. The company has, over its 25-year existence, staged shows at The Heritage Theatre (One Hit Wonders), the Rhumbelow Theatre (Denim to Diamonds, Musical Mania) The Sneddon Theatre (Everything Old Is New Again, To Be Frank), the Westville Civic Centre (Stage & Screen, Blast Thru the Past), to list a few.

“We are a non-profit organisation with two roles. First, to be a stepping stone for people wanting to build a career in this industry, and second, to be a creative outlet for people who who value this as a hobby,” said Snyder.
