GIG OF THE WEEK

Bob marley earth day reggae music festival

uShaka Marine World

The worldwide celebration of reggae legend Bob Marley’s birthday will be held at uShaka Marine World, outside Wahooz Bar on the promenade.

The reggae band and organisers of the Bob Marley Earth Day Reggae Music Festival, The Meditators, said the event would put everyone in high spirit and that last year’s event had hundreds of fans in attendance.

A group member, Sista Free, said Marley spread the spirit of unity and humanity, something that was no longer practised in the world: “We want to restore the unity while keeping his spirit alive. He spread the spirit of togetherness, unity and humanity through his music.”

Marley is best known for his hits No Woman, No Cry, One Love and I Shot the Sheriff.

According to Sista Free, Marley was also credited with successfully spreading Jamaican music and the Rastafari move-ment across the globe.

The line-up includes KZN reggae bands Rasta Rhythm, Tuff Masters Family, Queen Tshepi and the Undivided Roots Family Band, to name a few and the David Yaso Band from Bloemfontein.

“We are not sponsored, but they volunteered as a remem-brance to Marley. We are expecting more people to come and witness this amazing moment,” Sista Free said.

The Meditators are a local eight-piece reggae band which organise the annual Bob Marley Earth Day Reggae Music Festival.

They released their first album in 1993, followed by a second in 2000. They have performed with Rita Marley. – Khosi Biyela
