GIG OF THE WEEK

Steve Dyer & the Confluence Homecoming Tour

THIS weekend, music lovers can enjoy the diverse sounds of Steve Dyer (pictured) as the South African musician performs at Michaelhouse in Balgowan today, tomorrow at Le Aperitivo, uMhlanga Gateway; and on Sunday at the Rainbow Restaurant in Pinetown.

In an interview with Tonight, Dyer explains what his sixth album, titled Confluence, represents: “Confluence is the merging of rivers and more. So for me, we live in an increasingly globalised world where different cultures, ideas and value systems interact and sometimes collide with each other. I’ve tried to reflect and merge some of my musical influences past and present.”

In terms of said musical influences, the artist says they come from his life experiences:

“I started composing music from the age of 10, and was drawn to music. In my home environment,

I heard music from the Western classical masters such as Mahler, Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, from popular music such as The Beatles, Paul Simon and Bob Dylan. Also the Maskandi musicians who used to sing and play guitar while moving from A to B. I learnt to play folk guitar from this age, and sang in school choirs.

“Later at Michaelhouse, I saw music as a subject offered and wanted to take it. I am inspired not only by many great musicians,

but also other art forms and philosophy. I believe that no one culture holds the monopoly on human wisdom, and look to discover knowledge whatever

the source.

“The marginalised African collective wisdom social philosophy that shaped Baba Mandela, Tambo and others is one that can teach not only us, but also the world,” he said.

What can audiences expect from his KZN tour?

Dyer says: “The audiences can expect us to do our best to share the journey together with them.”
