CELEBRATING and promoting jazz in Durban and throughout South Africa is what the South African Jazz Educators Fest is all about.
On Sunday, get to the Rainbow Restaurant in Pinetown for a concert featuring Africa Plus and the Moss Mogale Unit.
The festival and conference takes place in Durban this week, with activities around UKZN and the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music.
Opening the afternoon will be the trio, Africa Plus. They are Prince Bulo (pictured) on bass guitar, Lungelo Ngcobo on piano and Sphelelo Mazibuko on drums.
Closing the afternoon, with a bit of old-school, will be the seven-piece Moss Mogale Unit, which has its foundations in the turbulent Seventies and Mamelodi township.
Moses “Moss” Mogale grew up during the days of marabi and kwela music, which were dominated by the pennywhistle wizards of the early Sixties. He was also privileged to come from a family environment rich with indigenous music. Among his list of musical inspirations are Frans Mothoka Maaka, aka Matascar, Charlie Thobejane, Ernest Mothle and Philip Tabane. – Tonight Reporter
