Take a trip down memory lane with One Jazzy Night which heads to Sibaya Casino soon.

A tribute to the likes of George Benson, Roberta Flack, R Kelly, Al Jarreau, Garth Taylor and many more, the show stars Clinton Philander, Gabriel Joseph, Kiran Kisson, Kerry Lee Cherry, Stacey Lee Erasmus and Ashleigh Joseph.

Also wearing the hat of writer and director, Philander said the show is designed in layers.

“We start off with some classic jazz and move into another section which is like the popular bands of the ’70s and ’80s – like the O’Jays, The Manhattans and so on. We also have some South African flavour with songs from artists like Lira and Ernie Smith. We also do a tribute to Zane Adams from Cape Town who passed away recently.”

Writing a show around jazz is quite tricky, but Philander said he wanted to try and make people realise that jazz is a genre that we need to treasure.

“We are seeing a re-emergence of the ’80s sound in the music of artists like Bruno Mars, Pharrell, Robin Thicke and others. But that jazz sound has yet to make a big commercial comeback, but I believe it will.

“Jazz has mainly been music that the older generations tend to enjoy, but through One Jazzy Night we want to go back in time and reminisce around the jazz classics.”

A major bonus is that the show features the popular Durban-based band, Afritude.

• The show stages May 15 to 17. Tickets are R150 at Computicket and Shoprite Checkers.
