It’s V-Day and you’ve left “the plan” for the last minute and now you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed trying to organise something…
Fear not, we’ve put together a list of options of Valentine’s Day events that have been brought to our attention; so whip up a cute home-made card, make some calls from the options below and Bob’s your uncle – that it may be last minute doesn’t matter, it is after all, the thought that counts.
Here’s a glance at some the options you have to entertain your loved one today:
l Popular Durban cabaret and revue artiste, Anthony Stonier, stars in That Old Devil Called Love tonight at a secret location. This revue takes a musical look at a variety of different love songs, some new and some old, some funny and some sad. Catch Stonier in this one-off private soirée celebrating the essence of Valentine’s Day with an hour of romantic music. The show starts at 6pm for 6.30pm. R80 a head, but it is limited to 80 people. l Thought Fire Events, in association with the Southern Sun Elangeni and JC le Roux, is hosting a Valentine’s Day dinner and dance. Entertainment by Durban band – Afritude (known for pop, rock and reggae covers from the ’60s to today); buffet dinner, a glass of sparkling wine per person and spot prizes. Tickets are R350 a person, R700 a couple and tables of 10 are available at R3 500 a table. Limited seats available on a first-come, first-served basis. No children under 12. Call 031 309 1106.
l Alliance Française de Durban presents Hearts of Valentine, an eclectic offering of poetry, music and a French movie. Starts at 6pm with Romance with Shakespeare and Molière (featuring Deaf Pavement Poets), In the Air (Wind Interlude showcasing harmonicas, concertinas and accordions), a special remembrance item (10 Minutes of Kitchen Memories with Steve Fataar) and Heartbeat Tunes (Open Mic). l Catch internationally acclaimed classical musicians Mirijam Contzen (violin) and Bryan Wallick (piano) at the Durban Jewish Centre, presented by Friends of Music. On the programme are Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Ravel, Debussy, Schumann and more. Time 7.45pm; tickets are R60 (members), R70 (non-members) and R20 (orchestral/students). Booking at Computicket.
l Kickstart Productions offers a Valentines Day special for their production Marc Camoletti’s Don’t Dress for Dinner, currently running at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. Performance is at 7.30pm, Special Gala Valentines Performance ticket price for tonight is R160, which includes a glass of sparkling wine on arrival. l After selling out tonight’s show, Memoirs: Simon and Garfunkel has been scheduled for an extra Valentine’s show tomorrow at The Westville Theatre Club. Catch Aaron Nel and Shanthan Pillay in the hit show paying tribute to the legends. Features hit songs such as Bridge over Troubled Water, The Boxer, Sound of Silence, and more. The show starts at 8pm, doors open a 7pm. Tickets are R80, bookings at 082 994 0984.
l uShaka Marine World has an array of Valentine’s Day treats on offer, and today is your last chance to take advantage of the specials. Stick a message on the “post-it-board” and stand a chance of winnning stunning jewellery from uShaka’s Village Walk. You can also have a seat with your love on the “kissing couch” in arena 3 where Kodak will take a photo of you and indulge in the “Love Boat” theme; or climb aboard the Phantom Ship where, if you dine at the Cargo Hold or the Upper Deck during February, you stand a chance of winning a cruise for you and your partner to the Portuguese Islands on the MSC Sinfonia for four days and three nights.
Valentine’s Day dinner at the Cargo Hold is a special one, with its romantic menu comprising dishes ranging from prawns, avocado and smoked salmon; roasted mushroom tian; ostrich carpaccio starters; lamb cutlets, roasted lemon chicken breast; to Cupid’s prawns and Parmesan and sage polenta mains – as well as a complimentary welcome drink on arrival – all this for R275 per person.
