Style that still lets the bride shine...
A musical journey to look forward to over the festive period is the Durban International Music and Cultural Carnival, Siyagiya.
Brought to you by Mbongeni Ngema and Committed Artists Foundation, the star-studded live extravaganza will take place at Westridge Park Stadium on December 16 and will feature a powerhouse of top acts, representing the best of South African and African music.
Says arts practitioner, Ngema: “The event will be a tightly choreographed spectacular and I will be directing the show. I wanted to focus on people who deserve to be celebrated this year. Each artist will play and then the next artist will come on, so it won’t be like other festivals where there’s a break in between each act. Here, there will be music straight after the other. I have great respect for all the artists whose songs will be played at the fest. And we will do a kind of kaleidoscope musical. We also want to cater for the youth as well,” he said.
There will be lots of young talent opening the event from Afropop songstress Bingelela, three-man hip hop group Norty-Boi-Kru, ghetto-street-soul house music group Cocktail, maskandi hybrid wonder-boy David “Qadasi” Jenkins and Durban’s award-winning group, Afrosoul along with Zakes Bantwini (pictured) and Naema K.
Thereafter, the event will showcase a jazz extravaganza, directed and starring Ngema himself. Here, tributes will be made to jazz greats such as Sipho Gumede, Allen Kwela and Sandile Shange.
Joining Ngema on stage include mega-award winning singer Lira, jazz legend Hugh Masekela, revered world music superstar Salif Keita and more.
Also, there will be a vibrant collage of Zulu and contemporary dancers as well as a 15-piece band comprising highly respected musos such as keyboard players, Eddie Mathiba, Butana Ngubeni and Barney Bophela, guitarist John Seloloane, saxophonist Khaya Mahlangu, trumpeters Sidney Mavundla and Adam Howard.
• Siyagiya will take place on December 16 at Westridge Park Stadium from 5pm. Tickets are available at Computicket.
