Wine lovers and wine makers, sommelier and amateur tasters, fridge fillers and wine cellar collectors, you don’t want to miss this year’s Mercury Wine Week.
Envelop your senses in tannins and bouquets as you treat your nose, and taste buds, to the best of what South Africa wine estates have to offer. This year the exhibition has made a historic change to their traditional opening days. For the first time in the show’s history, the event will start on a Thursday evening and close on a Saturday evening - giving visitors the opportunity to peruse the wine collection over the weekend.
Between Thursday, August 27 and Saturday August 29, around 100 wine estates will gather for three days at SUNCOAST. Bear witness to the debut of De Grendel Ceres Plateau appellation and the exclusive new Reyneke range from Woolworths. Or get your hands on a limited number of The Amos Block Sauvignon Blanc 2014 being exclusively sold at the Mercury Wine Week and originating from South Africa’s oldest sauvignon blanc vineyard on the Spice Route Malmesbury.
If you have expert wine tasting ambitions, you won’t want to miss the KwaZulu-Natal leg of the South African Wine Tasting Championships. Taking place at The Mercury Wine Week this year, amateurs and professionals have the opportunity to taste test their way into the national final with the ambition to join the national team in a world wine tasting duel in Chateauneuf du Pap, France.
If you’re looking for quality time with your favourite estates, you’ll want to head to the Grindrod Bank Wine Theatre. Each evening, the theatre will host dedicated tastings from various estates free of charge.
Among the presentations scheduled, Creation Wines will ask the question “what’s in a glass” that explores the effects the right-shaped glass has on a tasting experience. Stellenbosch Vineyards promises patrons a taste infusion whereby they can try their hand at wine blending, while Fairview will pair cheese and wine and Delheim will match gewürztraminer with Turkish delight.
As you wander the entanglement of tastes, select a few snacks to pair with your wine. From an array of Fairview cheeses and Romesco olives, there’ll be something to suit your selected vintage.
