IF you’re in the mood for something cray-cray that’s going to leave you in stitches, then be sure to check out the Playhouse Company’s production Crazy Guys. Featuring Joburg comedians Jay Boogy, Smokey Nyembe, Pule Welch, Sifiso Nene, Felix Hlophe and Mondli Mzizi, the audience is in for a night of absolute laughter.

During our one-on-one, multi-award-winning comedian Sifiso Nene (who is the MC for the evening) shares what audiences can expect from Crazy Guys.

He laughs as he explains just how insane the show is: “Like the title suggests, it’s crazy. It’s a bunch of crazy comedians coming together to make this production called Crazy Guys.

“I hardly perform in Durban, so they called me up, and I thought the line-up was great. Felix, Mondli and I have performed in Durban before, but the rest of the guys will be performing there for the first time. I think the comedians in the line-up complement each other, so people will be captivated by the show. It’s that’s good.”

In terms of the show’s content, it’s going to touch on everything from current affairs to politics.

“As comedians, we are going to talk about the State of the Nation, obviously, because it just happened. So, a lot of topics. We are all different, so we come together and put together a production which somehow ends up being a show that is talked about by everyone,” he says.

Having won the title of SABC 1’s So You Think You are Funny? in 2009, Nene says it was from that point he knew comedy was his calling. He also walked away with the Audience Choice Award at the SA Comics Choice Awards in 2012.

“But I still get nervous all the time. I feel that once you stop getting nervous, it means you think you are better than every- one else, and it goes to your head.

“So for me, before every show, I want to be scared for ever,” he laughs.

Nene says the toughest part about stand-up comedy is the crowd: “Any crowd is tough. Once you begin to think people are easy and you can make anyone laugh, then it has got to your head.

“So whether it’s five people or 500, I’m going to deliver in the same way. It doesn’t matter how many people are present. I respect what I’m doing, and I respect the people.”

Besides Crazy Guys, Nene has a few other projects up his sleeve. He has a documentary and a book coming out later this year.

According to Nene, those who attend Crazy Guys will be in store for a lot of laughter: “Come out and support us and, I promise, we won’t disappoint.”

Catch Crazy Guys on March 7 at the Playhouse. The show starts at 7.30pm. Tickets R160 at Computicket.
