They say practice makes perfect. The lecturers at this year’s Winter Dance Seminar will put aspiring and professional dancers on the road to perfection. Taking place from Saturday, the seminar will focus on classical ballet, pop/jazz, musical theatre and hip hop dancing. There will also be introductions to the Horton and Graham techniques.

Brought to you by The Western Province Dance Teachers Association, this seminar brings together the cream of lecturers in the dance world. There will be much insight from Elena Cangas of The National Ballet School of Cuba as well as Clare Baulieu and Roxanna Barbacaru of the Paris Opera Ballet School. Oui oui. And South Africa’s own dance maestros will not be left out either.

Originally from the US, South African-based freelance dancer and choreographer Matt Sanford will be one of the lecturers. He represents the country alongside Amanda Klotz, who is a Canadian-born choreographer and teacher, as well as Mandy Butler, who is from the UK but resides here. Pop/jazz and hip hop dancing will be their main focus.

Musical theatre is the forté of Jonathan Roxmouth, who has starred in Jesus Christ Superstar as well as A Handful of Keys. Roxmouth will lecture on this discipline and so will Jaco van Rensburg, who has flown the South African flag high by performing in many a musical overseas.

From classical to less conventional ways to move your body, this four-day seminar promises to help dancers with their journey to being the best they can be.

l The Winter Dance Seminar takes place at Cape Academy of Performing Arts in Tokai from Saturday to Tuesday. Tickets: R1 200 a teacher and vocational student, R750 a recreational student. Info: 021 674 3348 or 082 951 4771.
