Film fest has designs on an artsy line-up


Design Indaba is about to hit Cape Town. As a precursor, the Labia is hosting a film festival.

The Design Indaba Filmfest will run from Sunday to March 4 at the Labia on Orange.

A highlight will be the African premiere of Urbanized (2011), the final film in Gary Hustwit’s Design Trilogy.

The first two films looked at typography and industrial design, while Urbanized looks at architecture and urban design. It features some of the world’s foremost architects, planners, policymakers, builders and thinkers discussing the design of cities.

Other highlights include a screening of Sing Your Song, about the legacy of entertainer and activist Harry Belfonte.

Directed by Susanne Rostock, it delves into the significant contribution Belafonte has made to the civil rights movement in America and global social justice.

Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff looks at the first director of photography to win an horonary Oscar. His work on the films African Queen, The Red Shoes and A Matter of Life and Death has guaranteed him screen immortality.

El Bulli: Cooking in Progress is an insider’s view of Ferran Adrià’s El Bulli restaurant, which has been dubbed the world’s most influential by many.

Design Indaba alumnus Marian Bantjies uncovers what is possible with art and design in Marian Bantjes, Graphic Artist.

PressPausePlay looks at hope, fear and digital culture, while Punk in Africa tells the little-known story of punk’s movement through the landscape and politics of southern Africa.

A celebrated New York Times photographer takes a journey through the Big Apple in support of his belief that the best fashion show is on the street in Bill Cunningham New York, while Vigilante Vigilante looks at the people who take it upon themselves to rid the world of graffiti.

How Much Does Your Building Weigh, Mr Foster? is a celebration of the work of architect Norman Foster, while De Stoel van Rietveld is the story of a Dutchman’s chair that changed history.

Also included is the acclaimed Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Werner Herzog’s 3d film about one the world’s oldest art sites, Design The Business, Movements Continued, New York in Motion, Over Your Cities Grass Will Grow and Dive!

Two films will screen daily, at 6.15pm and 8.30pm. Tickets costs R30 at Computicket, or you can call 021 424 5927. Most films will screen twice over the two-week run of the festival.
