This weekend will start on a high note in the Mother City as musicians take to the stage. From popular musos in the province to award-winning local and international greats, there is plenty to see.
Grassy Park will be treated to a musical variety show on Sunday when brother-and-sister singing duo Lana English and Victor Siljeur perform in Lana and Victor With Friends at Sid G Rule Primary School hall.
In 2004, English played the role of Christine in The Phantom Of The Opera and she’ll bring this experience to the show when she performs a wealth of sonic delights that range from light classical to contemporary pop .
English will be joined on stage by Siljeur, Jean Halls, Renee Osborne and Faried Swartz.
When they aren’t thrilling their audience they will make way for the Limited Edition Drum Corps who may be remembered from the 2010 SA’s Got Talent competition.
Lana and Victor will also perform new songs from their upcoming self-titled album.
The siblings’ new CD is due for release next month.
Also in Cape Town this weekend, you can catch an Afro-Cuban explosion of music.
Cuban jazz musician Roberto Fonseca and award-winning South African jazz artist Jimmy Dludlu will both perform at St George’s Cathedral on Friday and Cape Town City Hall on Saturday.
The concerts are part of The Sound Bite Series and are in aid of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Joburg.
Tonota, which is guitarist extraordinaire Dludlu’s latest album, allowed him to take home the Sama for Jazz Album Of The Year late last month.
Fonseca has dedicated his newest album, YO, to the African continent and will launch it at these performances.
Painter Nico Phooko will be on stage and expressing his emotional reaction to whatever is in the music with his brush strokes on a canvas on both nights.
One of the paintings that results from this artistic collaboration will also be donated to the hospital that is named after our first democratic president.
In addition to being the headliners on this music and culture exchange trip down to the southernmost part of the African continent, Dludlu and Fonseca will conduct workshops specifically for up-and-coming jazz musos in the Western Cape at Cape Town City Hall.
The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital will be a Joburg hospital that is supposedly going to be ready and operational by 2014.
But some of the money made by the concert at the St George’s Cathedral this weekend will go towards repairing the cathedral’s roof.
