Dance fever is upon us once again. The local leg of the worldwide Red Bull BC One B-Boy Competition will take place at Feva Nightclub in Cape Town on Saturday.
Called the Red Bull BC One South Africa Cypher, the competition will see 16 of the country’s finest b-boys go head to head in a bid to be hailed the best in Mzansi.
Following the new Red Bull BC One format, there are to be no fewer than 60 Cyphers in 45 countries.
The country winners will have to battle it out with other b-boys on their continent and that will lead to six Qualifiers Cyphers.
From there, the finals will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in November.
The b-boy culture in SA is a force to be reckoned with, so it came as no surprise that Soweto was a host city for the Red Bull BC One Battle in 2007.
The energy drink company has tried to ensure the culture stays visible through publicised events like these and even the Red Bull Beat Battle dance competition.
This year, there was a Johannesburg Cypher to gauge the best in that region. There were also wildcard contests in Durban and other small competitions in Cape Town.
What’s going to take place this weekend in the Mother City is the final decider for who will represent SA.
That b-boy will then have to compete in Cairo, Egypt, later this year for a chance to be crowned the king of b-boying in the Africa /Middle East region.
Whoever wins that leg will then represent the whole continent in Brazil.
Make sense? Good.
This weekend, it will be up to the following b-boys to show and prove if they have what it takes to carry SA on their shoulders.
Benny (CT), Bizzo (DBN), Break Boy IP (CT), Chopstix (JHB), Dag (EL), Eddy B (JHB), Gift (PE), Jed (CT), Meaty (CT), Rhythm (PE), Roots (CT), Shorty Blitz (JHB), Silent Sam (CT), The Curse (CT), Trashbotic (CT) and Toufeeq (CT).
They will have to dance in front of judges Wouks No Jokes, Prophets Of The City’s Ramone and Kid David, who hails from Los Angeles. May the best b-boy win.
