This year the Imbewu SCrIBE Script Writing Competition has changed its rules to stage three nights of prepared readings from the top three scripts submitted to the scriptwriting competition.
The readings will take place at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective in Observatory at the beginning of October.
With the help of a team of theatre professionals based in Cape Town, the three scripts will be brought to life in a three-evening programme.
Imbewu Trusts’ Paul Griffiths and Sam de Romijn have decided to structure the competition in this way so that the scripts can be experienced in order to be developed further.
One of this year’s judges Neil Coppen said they felt, as with most plays in the initial draft stage, that the works would benefit from a table-reading and post-reading discussion. This would hopefully give the writers further insight into their works, allowing them the chance to develop them further before launching them on stage.
The works which will be read are Malebone by Lereko Mfono from Gauteng; Old Dogs by Anton Krueger from Grahamstown; and Betty’s Bentleys by Grace Newton from Cape Town.
• The readings will take place from October 10 to 12 at Theatre Arts Admin Collective, corner Milton and Wesley Roads, Observatory. Tickets: R20 for the readings and R50 for the supper option, which includes a mug of soup. Call 021 447 3683 or e-mail email@example.com to book.
