A DANCE routine on the pavement of Camps Bay turned into a day of treats and shopping for a group of young street performers.
The dancers were spotted by US actor Texas Battle who is shooting a new TV series in town. He was so moved by the barefoot performers that he decided to give them a treat.
Battle headed back to his hotel, organised a minivan and took the group to Canal Walk to buy them shoes.
There, he treated them to pizza, milkshakes and their first 3D movie.
Battle is known to many as Marcus Forrester, the adopted son of Eric Forrester in The Bold and the Beautiful.
He is on location for the first season of a new action adventure TV series called SAF3, due to be screened here later this year. SAF3 – pronounced “Safe” – is produced by the creators of Baywatch.
It is the soap opera star’s first visit to the Mother City and he will be filming here until mid-December.
Battle thinks Cape Town is “awesome”, and he has fallen in love with braais. “I’m loving being out here. The food’s great, the people are friendly and the city itself is really beautiful,” he said.
While there has not been much time for sightseeing, Battle has been up Lion’s Head and Signal Hill, and he’s bought an annual season ticket for the cableway so he can go up the mountain whenever he has a chance.
“That’s how much I love it.”
He has also taken a Metrorail train from Cape Town to Kalk Bay, stopping off at the Haven night shelter, and has visited Mzoli’s in Gugulethu a few times.
“I love barbecue, or as you guys call it – braai.”
He said his experiences in Cape Town have been an eye-opener. “It makes me appreciative of everything I do have, and it’s made me want to do as much as I can to help people while I’m out here.“
Apart from his soap opera role, Battle has also featured in TV series including One Tree Hill, The Bernie Mac Show, The Parkers, Committed, and in films Final Destination 3, Wrong Turn 2 and Coach Carter.
