The Zambezi River sets the scene while you explore the best of 4,000 square kilometres of unfenced wildlife area by boat, canoe, and vehicle and on foot, under the guidance of professionals who are passionate about the African bush and their area of expertise. These packages are ideally suited to participants travelling on their own, who wish to meet up with like-minded enthusiasts without the added cost of a single supplement charge. Workshops are limited to six participants to ensure personal attention.
Vanishing Giants of Africa – Elephant workshops
Together with Johan Marais, wildlife veterinarian and author of Great Tuskers of Africa and In Search of Africa’s Great Tuskers, explore the intriguing world of elephants, their complex social structures, behavioural patterns, genetics, means of communication and their undeniable importance to wildlife areas, while gaining an insight into the long-term, devastating effects of the ivory trade on our African heritage.
Accompanied by experienced guides, you’ll observe these majestic mammals in the diverse habitats and ecosystems offered in the Lower Zambezi Valley, with plenty of opportunities to view birds and other game in the bush and along the river.
The workshops are scheduled during the dry winter months, and although you’ll be comfortable in a pair of shorts and a shirt during the day, you’ll need a warm jacket in the early mornings and evenings.
Bring a pair of sandals and a comfortable pair of walking shoes and of course, a swimming costume. Your own pair of binoculars is essential and if you are a keen photographer, like Johan, don’t forget your lenses, additional memory cards, batteries and a charger. For protection against the blazing African sun, take sun cream, a cap or wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
The Elephant workshops will take place from 27 August to 1 September and 10 to 15 September.
