The December holidays are one of three peak travel periods for South Africans (the other two being Easter and the June/July school holidays). Flights during the festive season are pretty pricey due to increased demand but Cheapflights has good news for early bird bookers; the next two weeks are the best time to save on flights for travel in December.

Cheapflights.co.za, a global travel search platform, have looked at the data and found that this week and next week in particular – 27 weeks before the holidays – kicks off the best period for booking affordable flights for the summer holiday travel season. “We’ve run the numbers and have created a quick guide to when, on average, to find the best fares to the 20 most popular destinations for South African travellers for Christmas week”, said Andrew Shelton, Managing Director of Cheapflights.co.za.

For those who already know where they want to be for the holidays, Cheapflights’ guide to when to book the most popular flights for Christmas week serves up valuable insider information about the optimal time to find the best airfares. The guide also offers some insights into where South Africans head during the holidays and can help those who are more flexible with tips on saving and guidance for timing on a mix of possible destinations.

This week, savvy shoppers should be booking their holiday travel to Inhambe (in Mozambique) at an average fair of R5,082.46, followed by Mahé Island in the Seychelles (R5, 643.62) and London (at a very affordable R8,009.09).

The week of the 17th of July is the best time to book flights to several regional and international destinations. Closer to home, December flights to Harare and the Victoria Falls (at around R3,171.87) and Maputo (R3,303.35) will be at their cheapest. Internationally travellers can expect savings to Dubai (R5, 352.40) and Mauritius (R5,525.74), the two most popular searched for destinations.

“For South Africans planning a winter holiday break, here’s when our data shows that you’ll find the best airfares, on average, for Christmas week to the 10 most popular holiday destinations.

"Our Compass Report indicated that the best savings on flights are to be had three to six months in advance and the data above supports that”, believes Shelton, “It clearly pays to book in advance so savvy South Africans need to book their Christmas vacations in the next two weeks," he added.
