The number of Indian tourists travelling to South Africa increased by over 122 percent between 2005 and 2010, says Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk.
“South Africa is continuing to attract Indian tourists in great numbers, with 67,039 Indian tourists travelling to South Africa between January and September 2011, 29 percent more than over the same period in 2010,” he said in Mumbai on Monday during a two-day visit to India, according to a statement issued by his department on Tuesday.
He was visiting India to promote South Africa as a destination.
India was currently ranked the seventh biggest source market for South African tourism.
“The importance of India as a source market for South Africa cannot be underscored as India is an emerging travel market with massive growth potential.”
He said India's economic growth was predicted to continue over the next 40 years and, by 2050, was expected to be among the top-three global economies.
Tourist travel to South Africa was also boosted by South African Airways flying between the countries four times a week, and India's Jet Airways having five flights a week.
In addition there were daily flights connecting via eight other global cities, the department said. - Sapa

India is often described as "a rich country with a lot of poor people..." At least their poor people have a sense of culture, respect, hospitality and great spirituality. Out of a huge population of 1 billion (mostly poor), now with their economic boom and emphasis on education & entrepreneurship they now have more than 100 million people moving into middle-class with excess money to spend... they might as well spend some of it here as SA appears to be moving in the opposite direction...

There is obviously a lot of foreigners illegally in the country, seeping through the porous borders with the help of corrupt officials. But, the point of this article is that there is a legitimate increase of tourism from asia, with affluent Indian people obtaining legal visas, booking into hotels and paying for tour packages in SA. The latter is the type of "tourist" and their money that is most welcome in our country.
