Situated on the slopes of Ben McDhui at 3 001m, the highest mountain in the Cape, is Tiffendell ski resort.

Pioneered in 1993, it is the "only formal ski resort in the country" offering visitors a chance to experience an "alpine" holiday, while not leaving the country.

Here visitors can enjoy a full alpine experience. The resort is well equipped and its 200 guests are accommodated in heated timber chalets.

The more adventurous can camp or stay in the Hooggenoeg Hut about 8km from the lodge.

Ski instructors teach guests to ski or snowboard in a controlled and safe environment. Entertainment is guaranteed, ski gear can either be bought or hired and full medical support and evacuation is provided.

The resort is on a south slope, which holds snow longer and is open for skiing from the beginning of May to the end of September each year.

Snow slopes are guaranteed as the resort manufactures its own snow when the weather is clear.

From Cape Town, it takes about 13 to 14 hours to drive 1 177km to Rhodes and the resort is 24km above this historical town.

As the pass up to the resort is steep and sometimes very wet and snowy, the resort can arrange a shuttle. However, average two-wheel drive motor cars can reach the resort in dry conditions.
