Durban - This weekend Durban is set to be packed to the seams as visitors from around the country descend on the city for the Comrades Marathon.

Data from travel search platform, Cheapflights.co.za, show that searches for travel from Cape Town to Durban for this weekend are up over 500 percent compared to previous weeks, while searches for flights from Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth and are up 229 percent and 215 percent respectively.

For those who have left it to the last minute and who still want to travel to the sunny city for the Comrades weekend, there are still some deals to be found.

As can be expected, flights closer to the weekend for travel to Durban are the most expensive – best deals can be found by booking to fly this Thursday.

Those flying from Cape Town can pick up flights for travel on Thursday for under R2 000 (one way), compared to R2 409 for travel on Friday; while those coming from Port Elizabeth can still find flights for travel on or before Thursday for under R3 000 (one way).

Those competing or watching the marathon can also find some last minute package deals.

For just R4 691 per person, travellers can get a return flight from Cape Town, two nights’ accommodation, airport transfers and access to the ever indulgent spa at The Oyster Box in trendy Umhlanga Rocks on the Durban coastline, just twenty minutes outside of the city bowl.

If somewhere a bit more central and low key is more suited to the agenda, the Riverside Hotel and Spa, located just north of the city bowl, starts at R3 314 per person, and includes a return flight from Cape Town, two nights’ accommodation and breakfast.
