Durban - World-class and down-to-earth are perhaps the best ways in which to describe the Willow Stream Spa at Fairmont Zimbali Resort, in the Ballito coastal estate.

There are about 16 of these award-winning spas globally, all of which are synonymous with Fairmont. You’ll find them in Monaco, China, Egypt, India, Canada and elsewhere. All meet the hotel’s international standards, but draw from the locale in which they are based.

At Zimbali, you feel as though you are at the tip of Africa as the spa draws from the landscape and local culture, without veering towards a theme.

The spa is a sensory experience – calming, natural tones envelope you, while the sound of running water from a healing mineral pool and scents such as lemongrass all enhance the touch of the skilled therapists.

I enjoyed a Detox Foot Intonga, full body Aromatherapy Massage and Guinot Express Facial, punctuated by a scrumptious selection of healthy snacks.

The 60-minute foot detox is similar to a pedicure, without nail polish. An Intonga is an African tradition stick used to invigorate the foot as energy is a key aspect of the spa’s philosophy on wellness. It is similar to the Hawaiian Lomi Lomi.

The 60-minute full body massage is indulgent and energising, and with so many well-know brands, from aromatherapy to specialised pregnancy products on hand, can be customised to suit your preferences.

The facial leaves you, literally, ready to face the world. It helped drain my sinuses a bit and plump up fine lines.

The spa is everything you would expect and more.

The world dissipates into fluffy white gowns, avocado mousse entrees and champagne.

I don’t know what I enjoyed more – the uber-comfy spa beds or the beautiful relaxation lounge, from where you could while away the afternoon on round couches and watch the sun set beyond a private garden all from a double-volume glass room.
