Cape Town - As it’s school holidays and all, you might be wanting to take a break from making sarmies, but Lust Bistro & Bakery at Vrede en Lust in Simondium removes most of the hard work.

Most, I said. We were thrilled with the concept of creating our own sandwiches (or pizzas) by choosing bread and ingredients from a list of options, but that turned out to be more difficult than anticipated. Plain or toasted? Baguette, ciabatta, rye, multigrain wholewheat, or sourdough? And that’s before you even start piling on the fillings.

Each item is charged individually, and your imagination and your palate are the only limits. It took us longer to make up our minds than for the kitchen to prepare our creations. Choose from a variety of greens, spreads and preserves, cheeses, meats, and, in a category all of its own, smoked salmon trout.

For pizzas, you can choose the size of your base and whether to have it plain, wholewheat or sourdough, before topping with any or all of 16 ingredients. Plus there’s a full breakfast and lunch bistro menu, so beware order envy when you see what others are having.

Vrede en Lust is just off the R45 on the way to (or from) Franschhoek, which will be abuzz this weekend with the 21st annual Bastille Day festival. Do pop in for a taste in the spectacular wine tasting room, which has a huge veranda overlooking the vineyards.

I recommend White Mischief, a blend of five varietals, and in lieu of any other wine ever being named after me, besides the low alcohol one in Woolies (on which I was obviously not consulted), I claim this one. If you want a red, the Mocholate Malbec is gorgeous.
