Cape Town - Red wine and cold meat, or to be posh Shiraz and charcuterie, will be the focus of a festival at Anthonij Rupert Wyne in Franschhoek on Saturday, May 28 from noon to 5pm.

You’ll be able to sample the farm’s wines like the Anthonij Rupert Syrah, the Cape of Good Hope Riebeek’s Rivier Shiraz, and Protea Shiraz – which comes in a pretty floral bottle which can be reused for all sorts of things, like water or olive oil – as well as those from other farms, including Rust en Vrede, Waterford, Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, Hartenberg Estate, Simonsig and Thelema.

Wait, what? Shiraz, Syrah? They are genetically the same grape but the wines they produce can be different in style, depending on origin.

The typical old-world Syrah is lighter and leaner than the intense shiraz wines of the new world which tend to be richer, riper and more full-bodied. This is the time to learn more.

Besides the charcuterie pairings there will be yummy winter dishes to go with your lovely red – like French onion soup with Gruyere croutons, braised lamb arancini (risotto balls) with home-made tomato chutney, and Toulouse sausages with braised lentils.

l Tickets cost R180 a person and are limited, so pre-booking is recommended.

Tickets include entry as well as wine tastings.
