Cape Town - Government Avenue was a hive of activity on Monday as thousands of visitors flocked to the Company’s Garden to enjoy the 11-day summer market.

The market, opened by mayor Patricia de Lille last week, showcases some of Cape Town’s finest arts and crafts, with more than 200 vendors.

There is also a wide variety of food and drink on offer – from ice cream to boerewors, pizza, cooldrinks, beers and wine. The market, previously held in Adderley Street, opens at noon and runs until late.

For temporary tattoos, face painting and beauty treatments, as well as all manner of handmade crafts, including Christmas trees made from wire and beads, this is the place to be.

Justin Buys, who makes wall clocks and jewellery pieces from abalone shells, was excited to be at the market.

“We sell 100 percent oceanic products. We wanted to take away the negative connotation behind perlemoen. My grandfather came up with these.”

Buys said that business was good but that it could be better.

Situated in a quiet corner, Tania Jacobs was selling vintage clothing and said that this was one of the best markets she had been at.

“I usually go around to different markets selling vintage pieces – this is my full-time job – but this has been the most interesting market,” Jacobs said.

“I have met people from all walks of life and the energy here is different.”

Jacobs said that she was thoroughly enjoying her time at the market.

There is also a Company’s Garden party for those who have gone there just to relax or are fed up with shopping.

The party is being held on the lawn adjacent to the Iziko Museum and entry is free until 5pm. After 5pm, a R40 entrance fee is charged for adults.

The summer market will be open every day until Christmas Eve, when it closes at 5pm. - Cape Argus
