Cape Town - The early risers and the madly energetic among you can put this Saturday in the diary. There are two outdoor activities for you in the Grabouw Valley.
The Tru-Cape Grabouw MTB challenge at the Grabouw Country Club is a calendar favourite, with some of the best single track routes available in the country. That it raises funds for Grabouw High School makes it doubly worthwhile.
Entry fees for races vary from R50 for Pedal Power Association members entering the 10km to R280 for non-members entering the 50km race. Times are 50km at 9am, 25km at 9.20am and 10km at 9.40am.

In another section of the valley, at the nearby Applewood School on the Appletiser road, people will gather at 8am for an 11km trail run through the beauty of the surrounding fynbos and farmlands, or participate in a more gentle 5km fun run or walk. There is a R10 entry fee for families wanting to attend the harvest festival at Applewood. Parent and apple grower Catherine Boome said while the goal of the event is to raise funds for the school, it is also about celebrating all things apple.
“The Applewood Harvest Festival is a day of adventure, apple-themed activities and the best of Elgin’s gourmet artisanal and farm-grown produce. Expect fine fare from local restaurants The Poolroom, Hickory Shack and Peregrine, among others, and the best of craft cider and Elgin wines.
“Master an apple tasting, buy apple pies and apples by the bag and let the kids run free. There will be lots of entertainment, from live music and tractor rides, to hay-diving and bobbing for apples as well as beautiful goodies from local makers.
“The trail run is a highlight as this is the first time that runners will experience this beautiful, privately owned land, on this side of the N2. Runners already know the older areas but this run will be something truly new.”
