Cape Town has any number of superb restaurants but few of them are on the sea. Those that are, are generally overpriced.

That’s set to change this holiday season but you’re going to have to move quickly if you want to benefit: the 90-seat Granger Bay Hotel School restaurant (next to the Radisson Hotel in the V&A Waterfront) is open for lunch and dinner every day.

Most core permanent staff are school alumni. They are assisted by student chefs and sommeliers. The summer menu ranges from a cheese and meat platter to slow-cooked Osso Bucco, stuffed saddle of lamb or fragrant chicken and prawn curry. All main courses cost less than R100 while starters and desserts are restricted to below R50.

There is an extensive wine list.

Christmas lunch and New Year’s Eve dinner each cost R395 a person. The former features no fewer than 12 starters, turkey or linefish with numerous side-orders and a sumptuous smorgasbord of festive desserts, while the year-end function comprises crafted canapés and sparkling wine (on arrival), followed by a four-course meal. This will include slow-roasted duck or crusted linefish.

There is ample off-street parking – and it’s free.

Early booking is essential (021 440 5736), especially for Christmas and New Year. – Saturday Star
