Cape Town - The Conde Nast Readers’ Travel Awards 2016 chose Cape Town as Best Overseas City for Restaurants and Bars.
The globally-recognised travel magazine also named Cape Town as a runner-up in the category of Favourite Overseas City on September 1.
The magazine also featured South Africa as one of the most affordable holiday destinations in the world.
Cape Town Tourism chief executive Enver Duminy said they were thrilled to be on the receiving end of such prestigious accolades in the Conde Nast Readers’ Travel Awards.
“It must be noted that tourism in the city is a major driver of the economy to the Western Cape, providing job opportunities to thousands of residents, and the attention earned by such awards aids in the growth of this sector.”
He added the Conde Nast Readers’ Travel Awards would help position Cape Town as a global competitor when it came to travel. While this award was one of several won in 2016 alone, Duminy said it showed the favourable attitude international travellers had towards Cape Town.
“With the exchange rate being attractive within this market, we are able to offer affordable luxury. The high season in 2015/2016 resulted in some record-breaking figures at Cape Town International Airport and in visitor numbers at many attractions.”
Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Janine Myburgh said the outstanding success of many of our restaurants was the result of competition and the demand for the best from overseas visitors. “The great thing is that these restaurants are found in many places in the heart of the City and in towns like Franschhoek.”
