Cape Town - The number of visitors to Table Mountain has reached a record high.

The City of Cape Town said in a statement yesterday that 120 318 local and international visitors had taken the Table Mountain cable car during December alone.

This translated into an increase of 2 percent compared to the same time last year.

Other tourist attractions were also popular over the festive season, with Cape Point reporting an increase of 4.25 percent in December, while Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens had an increase of 9.08 percent.

The number of visitors through Cape Town International Airport also reported an increase of 2.07 percent, with a 6.7 percent increase of international visitors during the same period.

Robben Island was the only tourist attraction which had a drop in the number of visitors – dropping by 5 percent compared to last year.

Mayoral committee member for tourism, events and marketing Grant Pascoe said: “With the city having just received the top spot on the prestigious New York Times list of 52 places to visit in 2014 and being awarded the World Design Capital title, we expect more international and regional visitors this year.” - Cape Times
