Cape Town - Capetonian Terche April celebrated her 24th birthday by going up Table Mountain for the first time in her life – it also made her the 22nd millionth visitor to do so in the cable car.

A surprised April, who was with her equally surprised boyfriend, Eugene Speak, was greeted with balloons and a hamper by a cableway staff member who congratulated them and also sang Happy Birthday.

April said that although she grew up in Grassy Park, she had never been up the mountain before.

Collette van Aswegen, the marketing manager of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, said they had been monitoring ticket sales over the past few weeks to know when they would reach Tuesday’s milestone.

She added that she was glad it was a South African. - Cape Argus
