Cape Town – Cape Town International Airport recorded its highest number of passengers last year, a spokeswoman said on Thursday.

Around 8.6 million passengers used the airport last year, a 3.5 percent increase on about 8.3 million passengers in 2013, said Deidre Davids.

“To a region such as Cape Town, which is heavily reliant on tourism, this is something to be celebrated.”

She said 6.7 percent more regional visitors and 6.2 percent more international visitors made their way through the airport in 2014.

The overall growth last year could be attributed to a number of factors.

Davids said new domestic airlines and routes were introduced.

On the international front, airlines operated extra flights during the winter season.

The last quarter of the year saw international seasonal airlines, such as Edelweiss and Lufthansa, fly the Cape Town route.
