London - A drunken fight between two British men on Thursday forced a plane of football fans to land 700 miles (about 1 100km) from its destination.

The Ryanair flight from Liverpool to Alicante diverted to Limoges in the west of France because the men were “endangering other passengers”, an airport spokesperson said.

They were thought to be among a stag party sharing the flight with supporters going to see Liverpool play Villarreal in the Europa League semi-final. A French police spokesman said both were being held “while they sober up”.

The Boeing 737, with around 180 passengers, continued on to Spain. The men were expected to appear in court in Limoges.
