Cape Town - Low-cost carrier FlySafair has launched another value added service that will change the way its passengers fly: Priority Boarding.

People looking to fly from Cape Town or Johannesburg after the 21st of October will now have the option to add Priority Boarding to their bookings for a R50 premium.

“The benefit is eroded if there are too many people with Priority Boarding, so we will limit the number of priority boarders per flight,” says Kirby Gordon, Vice President of Sales and Distribution at FlySafair.

The carrier says the service was born out of customer feedback. “We make it our business to keep close to our passengers and maintain an open dialogue. Priority Boarding has been requested in customer feedback time and again, so it made sense to implement it,” adds Gordon.

Since launching a year ago, FlySafair has made several waves in domestic aviation.

The airline’s consistently low fares have seen domestic travel prices drop by as much as 39 percent on some routes.

It maintains the best on-time performance in the country, with 95 percent of departures happening within ACSA’s required 15-minute grace period – an effort that has the industry hoping to improve general performance in the last year.

It was the first airline in South Africa to introduce an “unbundled fare” that allows passengers to choose their own extras, like checked-in luggage.

The airline reports that less than half of passengers actually take a bag, estimating that it has saved the public more than R51-million in luggage fees. Recent reports indicate that other carriers will soon follow suit.

“Competition is tough at the moment,” admits Gordon. “We’ve brought prices down as low as they can go for the moment, so now it’s time to focus on thrilling our passengers even more.”
